About St Gredifael's Church
St Gredifael’s Church stands in Llangefni, Gwynedd, and belongs to the Church of England denomination. Although it no longer holds services, the church has Grade II* protection in recognition of its largely unaltered medieval fabric, significant funerary sculpture and connections with the Penmynydd Tudors.
Saint Gredifael founded a place of worship at the site during the sixth century. The surviving masonry church originated in the twelfth century and underwent substantial remodelling two centuries later, including work to its nave and chancel using carved Norman stone. During the early 1400s, builders added a chapel to the north and a porch to the south. Further repairs were completed in 1848, 1969 and following public funding awarded in 2010. The northern chapel contains alabaster memorials to Goronwy Fychan ap Tudur and Myfanwy Fychan. Its decoration includes stained-glass Tudor roses, the Beaufort portcullis and fleurs-de-lis.
