About Salem Welsh Baptist Church
Salem Welsh Baptist Church is a Baptist place of worship in the Harlech area of Gwynedd, Wales. The chapel stands at Pentre Gwynfryn, near Llanbedr, roughly a mile upstream from the village. Set on raised ground between two river valleys, it lies about 270 metres above their meeting point. The building is protected with Grade II listed status.
Construction began in 1826 and was completed in 1851. A decade later, the chapel was enlarged with an adjoining house, while its interior was remodelled. It became especially well known through Sidney Curnow Vosper’s 1908 painting, *Salem*. Colour reproductions distributed after Lord Leverhulme bought the work in 1909 brought the image into many homes, particularly among Welsh working-class communities. The painting also became associated with debate about apparently concealed faces, although Vosper denied placing faces in the central figure’s shawl.
