About Llanffinan (St. Ffinan) Church
Llanffinan (St. Ffinan) Church is a small rural parish church near Llangefni in central Anglesey, Gwynedd. Reached along a gravelled country track, it remains an active place of worship, with services held weekly as part of a combined parish. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building for its architectural interest.
A church existed in the locality by 1254, while nineteenth-century accounts attributed its foundation to St Ffinan in the early seventh century. The present stone building was designed by John Welch and completed in 1841 in a simple Romanesque Revival style. It has a rectangular plan, slate roofing and a western bellcote, with no structural separation between nave and chancel. Earlier features were retained, including a circular twelfth-century gritstone font, two eighteenth-century memorials and the cross above the east end. Memorial stained glass was later installed in the windows.
