About St Cwyllog's Church, Llangwyllog
St Cwyllog’s Church stands near Llangwyllog, around three miles north-west of Llangefni in Gwynedd, Wales. Set in rural surroundings, it remains an active place of worship within a group of seven churches. The church is protected as a Grade II* listed building for its significant medieval character, later architectural elements and surviving Georgian furnishings.
Cwyllog, a female Welsh saint, is believed to have established a church on the site during the sixth century. Although a church was documented here by 1254, the oldest walls of the current rubble-built structure may originate from about 1200. Its late medieval features include the northern entrance and chancel window, while a lower western annexe was added during the sixteenth century. Restoration took place in 1812 and 1854. Notable details include a decorated thirteenth-century font, an uncommon three-tier Georgian pulpit with reading desk, an ornamented bell dated 1661, and stained glass installed in 1882 to a design by Henry Holiday.
