About St Ceinwen's Church, Cerrigceinwen

St Ceinwen’s Church, Cerrigceinwen stands in the Anglesey countryside, roughly two miles south-west of Llangefni. Set below road level near the village, this former parish church has closed and is not currently a place of worship. It holds Grade II listed status, reflecting both its restrained Victorian design and the historic masonry incorporated into the building.

Christian worship may have taken place here from the seventh century, although one tradition proposes an origin in AD 450. A medieval predecessor underwent repairs in 1839 before Henry Kennedy and Frederick Rogers designed the replacement, completed in 1860. Constructed of rubble stone with freestone detailing, it has a slate-covered roof, nave, chancel, porch, vestry and bellcote housing one bell. Carved grave slabs dating from medieval times were incorporated beside and above the entrance. Inside are a decorated circular font from the twelfth century, coloured glazing, exposed roof timbers and memorial stones. The churchyard also contains St Ceinwen’s Well, historically believed to offer cures.
