About St Thomas Aquinas Church

St Thomas Aquinas Church is an active Roman Catholic parish on Ham Street, beside the west side of Ham Common in Richmond. Sunday Mass is celebrated at 8.30 am. A separate Sunday service in German serves nearby German-speaking Catholics, whose congregation also takes part in shared worship with the local German-speaking Lutheran community.

Completed in 1890, the premises originally housed St Andrew’s School and provided separate accommodation for boys, girls and younger children. The school closed in 1966 after a larger replacement opened. The Catholic community purchased the property two years later, turning the north end into a place of worship and the south end into a hall for parish and neighbourhood activities. Mass was first offered in the converted building in October 1968. The congregation gained independent parish status in 1985, and Archbishop Michael Bowen formally consecrated the church in January 1987. Paul Quail created its single-light stained glass depiction of the Heavenly Jerusalem, added in 1990.
