About Bethlehem Chapel

Bethlehem Chapel is an independent Calvinistic place of worship in Church Terrace, Richmond, Greater London. This Grade II* listed church continues to follow traditional forms of worship and teaching. Its congregation uses the King James Bible, with a service at 11.00 am each Sunday and an evening meeting for prayer and Bible study at 8.00 pm on Thursdays.

The chapel dates from 1797 and was commissioned by John Chapman, a Petersham market gardener, using money raised through public contributions. William Huntington, a Calvinist minister linked with the establishment of numerous English chapels, conducted its opening. The compact, stucco-finished building has a single floor, while its historic internal layout survives with a gallery, fixed seating and pulpit. In May 1846, a representative of the chapel’s Protestant Dissenting congregation submitted a House of Lords petition supporting proposed legislation on charitable trusts.
