About St Elizabeth of Portugal
St Elizabeth of Portugal is an active Roman Catholic parish church on The Vineyard in Richmond, Greater London. Dedicated to Elizabeth of Portugal, a queen of the fourteenth century, it is protected as a Grade II listed building. The church holds Mass each day and is said to be the oldest surviving Catholic church within the Archdiocese of Southwark.
The parish has its origins in the 1790s, while the present church was completed in 1824 as a gift from Elizabeth Doughty. Thomas Hardwick provided the design, using red brick with contrasting yellow brickwork. A gallery followed in 1851. In 1903, the chancel, tower and presbytery were reconstructed to designs prepared by Frederick Walters. The nave contains Stations of the Cross conceived by Don Pavey and painted by Jo Ledger during the 1950s.
