About Our Lady of Loreto and Saint Winefride
Our Lady of Loreto and Saint Winefride is a Roman Catholic parish church serving Kew Gardens in Richmond upon Thames. It stands on Leyborne Park and remains the parish’s place of worship. A hall with a smaller meeting space adjoins the church.
The parish began as a Society of Mary mission in 1898, initially meeting in a temporary chapel on Kew Gardens Road. The present church, designed by Alexander Scoles with the firm Scoles & Raymond, opened in 1906. Its dedication reflects the Society of Mary’s connection with the Italian shrine at Loreto and benefactor Frances Elizabeth Ellis’s devotion to Saint Winefride. Side aisles, chapels and a baptistery were built in 1968, followed by alterations to the sanctuary in 1977 and refurbishment in 1998. After parishioner Moya Rinkenback’s 1979 bequest cleared the remaining debt, Archbishop Michael Bowen consecrated the building on 27 April that year.
