About St Mary Magdalene's

St Mary Magdalene's is an Anglican parish church on Cowfold Road in Bolney, near Haywards Heath in West Sussex. Dedicated to Mary Magdalene, it ministers to a broad countryside parish. It continues in parish use and has Grade I listed protection.

The church probably began around 1100, though the character of the southern entrance has prompted suggestions of Saxon origins. The early fabric includes a nave and a smaller chancel positioned at a slight angle. Medieval additions include windows from around 1300 and a piscina dating to the 1200s. From 1536 to 1538, local people built the sandstone western tower under the direction of landowner John Bolney, who financed the project. Later alterations brought a singers’ gallery in 1670, a southern porch in 1718 and an extra aisle during the 1853 Victorian works. Other features include the 1898 tower clock, rural-themed glass installed in 1982, and a 1905 churchyard gateway fashioned from oak, old millstones, Sussex Marble and Horsham Stone.
