About Church of St Mary
The Church of St Mary is a Church of England parish church in Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire. Originating in the 12th century, it remains a place of parish worship and has held Grade I listed status since 1966.
The chancel forms the earliest surviving section, although later alterations have reshaped it. The nave, aisles and western tower followed during the 13th century, with the southern porch added late in the following century. Repairs took place around 1720, while William Samuel Weatherley oversaw a restoration in 1892 that introduced a vestry and stair turret. Cobble and red brick are combined with stone detailing beneath tiled roofs. Notable elements include the three-level embattled tower with gargoyles, a Norman priest’s doorway, an octagonal font, medieval brass memorials, a piscina, three aumbries and a hagioscope linking the vestry and chancel.
