About Holy Rood Catholic Church
Holy Rood Catholic Church is a Roman Catholic parish in Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, situated in King Street. Founded in the nineteenth century, it remains the town’s Catholic parish church.
Edward James Willson designed the first chapel, which opened in 1824 with room for 200 worshippers. Its Classical appearance followed a form widely used by Catholic congregations during that period. In 1867, Algernon Moore, a priest who had converted from Anglicanism, arranged for Sheffield firm Hadfield and Son to extend the building. Their work introduced aisles on either side and a red-brick tower. Serious deterioration of the roofs prompted further alterations in the 1980s, when a single-span structure replaced the coverings over the nave and aisles. Three medieval vestments linked to Sixhills’ former Gilbertine priory are kept inside. Their embroidered orphreys date from approximately 1390 to 1520 and are now attached to a modern cope and two chasubles.
