About St Peter's Church, Normanby by Spital
St Peter's Church, Normanby by Spital, is a former Anglican place of worship near Market Rasen in Lincolnshire. This Grade I listed church is no longer used for regular services and is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust. It stands near the A15, on the route once followed by the Roman Ermine Street.
The church originated in the 12th century and was extended or modified during each of the next three centuries. Built largely from limestone rubble, with ironstone bands and dressed stone details, it comprises an aisled nave, chancel and three-stage western tower. The Norman north arcade and tower arch date to around 1200, while the late 12th-century font rests on a Victorian base. A restoration in 1890 included reconstruction of the southern aisle. Other notable survivals include a 17th-century altar table, a painted 1767 benefactors’ board and three bells cast between about 1500 and 1747, although they can no longer be rung.
