About St Andrew's Church

St Andrew’s Church stands on Church Road in Upper Wanborough, Swindon, Wiltshire. It remains an active Church of England parish church within the Diocese of Bristol and is protected as a Grade I listed building.

A place of worship has occupied the site since at least the eleventh century, while the present building dates chiefly from the fourteenth century. During that period, the nave was reconstructed and a tower and spire were built over the crossing. Work on the western tower began in 1435, with the chancel and north porch also added during the fifteenth century. Built from chalk rubble and roofed with stone tiles, the church has aisles, pointed arcades and a crenellated three-stage tower. Its combination of a western tower and a spire above the centre is found at only two other English churches. Restoration in 1887 uncovered medieval wall paintings, including a depiction of Christ entering Jerusalem. Other features include early monuments, stone effigies and nine bells.
