About St Osmund Catholic Church

St Osmund Catholic Church is a Roman Catholic parish church at 95 Exeter Street in central Salisbury, opposite Bishop Wordsworth’s School. It remains a place of worship within the parish of St Osmund and holds Grade II listed status.

Augustus Pugin created the Gothic Revival design, and construction took place between 1847 and 1848. Bishop William Ullathorne set the foundation stone in place on 8 April 1847, and the church was consecrated on 6 September 1848. Built from flint and stone, it originally comprised a nave, chancel, southern aisle and south-west tower crowned by a pyramidal roof. Edward Doran Webb oversaw an extension in 1894, adding a gabled aisle on the north side and modifying the southern aisle. Pugin also designed the altars and stained glass produced by Hardman & Co. in 1850. The chancel decoration was restored to his original scheme during the 1980s.
