About Salisbury Cathedral

Salisbury Cathedral is a Church of England place of worship in Salisbury, Wiltshire. Formally dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, it is protected at Grade I and continues to serve as an Anglican cathedral. The precinct around it is the country’s most extensive cathedral close and includes numerous structures valued for their history or architecture.

Work started in 1220 after the cathedral was moved from Old Sarum. The Earl and Countess of Salisbury laid the first stones, and the principal worship spaces were finished within 38 years. This concentrated building period produced an unusually harmonious example of the Early English Gothic style, distinguished by slender lancet windows. Much of its dressed stone was quarried at Teffont Evias. Later elements included the cloister, chapter house, tower and 123-metre spire, completed around 1330 and now the highest in England. Among its notable possessions are a very early functioning clock and one of four extant original Magna Carta copies. A long programme of exterior conservation concluded in 2023.
