About St Wilfrid's Church, Halton, Leeds
St Wilfrid's Church, Halton, Leeds is a Church of England church in the Halton suburb of Leeds, West Yorkshire. It is recognised for its architectural importance as a Grade II* listed building.
Albert Randall Wells designed the church, which was constructed from 1937 to 1939 at a cost of £11,700. Viscount Halifax donated the Halton Hill plot, while Sir John Priestman funded the building. Its foundation stone dates from 6 November 1937. The design combines Arts and Crafts influences with modernist ideas, incorporating Early English Gothic elements such as windows with triangular heads. Inside, concrete vaults give the building a character associated with German Expressionist church architecture. Many fittings created by Wells remain, alongside artwork by Eric Gill. Edward Gardiner, a former associate of Ernest Gimson, made the congregational seating.
