About All Saints Church
All Saints Church stands in Barwick-in-Elmet, within Leeds, West Yorkshire. It remains in use as an Anglican parish church in the Leeds diocese and archdeaconry. Together with St Philip’s in Scholes, it forms part of the parish covering Barwick, Elmet and Scholes. It received Grade II* protection in July 1986.
Surviving elements date from both the Anglo-Saxon and Norman periods. The fourteenth-century chancel predates the aisles and tower, which were built during the following century, while the southern porch is sixteenth-century. Designed in the Perpendicular Gothic tradition, the two-level tower features a large red clock and paired openings for the bell chamber. George Gilbert Scott prepared plans for extensive work undertaken from 1844 to 1855, and pinnacles and parapet walls followed in 1869. Interior details include a six-sided Georgian oak pulpit, a sculpted lectern, Victorian seating, masonry memorials and coloured glass. Nineteenth-century hammer-beam timbering covers the nave and chancel.
