About All Souls' Church
All Souls' Church is an active Church of England parish church on Blackman Lane in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Its worship follows the Anglo-Catholic tradition, and the building has Grade II* listed status. The large Victorian church continues to hold regular Sunday and weekday services.
Funded through public donations, the church was created in the Leylands as a memorial to W. F. Hook, who served as Vicar of Leeds for about 22 years before becoming Dean of Chichester. George Gilbert Scott designed it shortly before his death, after which John Oldrid Scott supervised construction. The foundation stone was placed in September 1876, and consecration followed on 29 January 1880. Built on an imposing scale, it has aisles beside both the nave and chancel, a south-west porch and a baptistery beneath its north-west tower. Southowram, Meanwood, Harehills and Park Spring stone were used in different parts of the structure. Notable fittings include Emily Ford’s painted font cover, a limewood rood by John Francis Kavanagh, and an Abbott and Smith organ dating from 1877.
