About Christ Church

Christ Church is an active Church of England parish in Upper Armley, Leeds, West Yorkshire. The building occupies a prominent site where Theaker Lane meets Moorfield Road and Armley Ridge Road, making it the nearer of Armley’s two Anglican churches to the district centre. It forms part of the Diocese of Leeds and is designated Grade II for its architectural and historic interest.

Construction started in 1869 and concluded three years later, following plans prepared by Richard L. Adams. The Gothic Revival building uses blocks of local gritstone arranged in even horizontal layers beneath a sloping slate-covered roof. Its principal architectural elements include a lofty nave and upper-level windows divided into three sections. Statutory protection was granted in 1976, while changes to update the interior were undertaken in 1984. Information about the church, including uncertainty at that time over its future, was preserved through the BBC Domesday Project in 1986.
