About St George's Church, Leeds

St George’s Church, Leeds is an active Church of England parish church in central Leeds, close to Leeds General Infirmary. Part of the North West Leeds deanery, it serves a congregation drawn from across the city, including students. The church belongs to the charismatic evangelical tradition and holds regular Sunday services alongside weekday activities. Its building is Grade II listed.

Construction began in 1836 to designs by local architect John Clark, with the church consecrated in November 1838. Conceived in a restrained and robust style with little decoration, it has a nave and aisle beneath a wooden roof, together with a clock tower and a spire originally measuring 160 feet. Burial vaults were added below during construction because Leeds lacked sufficient burial space. A sanctuary painting by Leeds-born artist Charles West Cope was installed in 1841 and remains in place. The spire fell during severe winds in 1962 and was finally replaced in 2006.
