About St Stephen's Church, Low Elswick
St Stephen's Church, Low Elswick, is a former Church of England place of worship on Brunel Terrace in Newcastle upon Tyne. Now redundant, it is protected as a Grade II listed building and cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. Only the tower survives, with access to its base available by advance appointment.
Sir William Armstrong laid the foundation stone in November 1866. Construction finished in 1868, when Charles Baring, then Bishop of Durham, dedicated the church. The sandstone building had a Welsh slate roof and was designed in the Decorated Gothic Revival style, with a nave, aisles, transept, chancel and north-west tower. After redundancy in 1984, dry rot led to the demolition of the main body in 1987–88. The three-stage tower has grouped bell openings, battlements, flying buttresses and a high octagonal spire. Its eight bells were made by John Taylor of Loughborough in 1880.
