About Church of St John the Evangelist

The Church of St John the Evangelist is on Neasham Road in Darlington, County Durham. This Grade II listed building formerly served a Church of England congregation. Worship ended with a final service on 5 February 2023, after reduced attendance and higher operating expenses prompted the decision to close.

Designed by John Middleton, the church was erected during 1847–49 and first welcomed worshippers on 3 January 1850. George Hudson MP laid its inaugural stone on 10 September 1847, and the Bishop of Durham consecrated the completed building in July 1853. Although the tower rises to 90 feet, a planned 160-foot spire was not constructed. W. S. Hicks provided new vestries in 1900. Eight bells hang in the tower: five cast by Charles and George Mears in 1848, with another three supplied by Mears and Stainbank in 1893. The two-manual instrument installed by H. S. Vincent and Company in 1890 has Grade II* recognition from the British Institute of Organ Studies.
