About All Saints Presbyterian Church

All Saints Presbyterian Church stands on Pilgrim Street in Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear. This Grade I listed Presbyterian church is notable for its scale, ranking as the city’s third-highest religious building and ninth-highest structure overall.

The present church was built in 1786 to designs by David Stephenson, replacing a medieval place of worship documented on the site in 1286. Its elliptical plan is unique among churches in England. The earlier Gothic building had a square western tower topped by a small turret and short spire, with entrances from Pilgrim Street and Silver Street. Its large windows contained stained glass, much of which was damaged during the Civil War. The old church also held several chantries and a memorial to Newcastle benefactor Roger Thornton, whose surviving brass was later placed in Newcastle Cathedral.
