The Church of Saint Thomas the Martyr is an active Anglican church at the Haymarket in central Newcastle upon Tyne. It stands near the universities, City Hall and principal shopping streets. In 2019, the Diocese of Newcastle designated it as a resource church and appointed a new ministry team. Its congregation has since attracted many university-age worshippers and younger adults. The church holds Grade II* status, with Sunday worship at 10:30 AM.
Its roots reach back to a chapel established no later than the early thirteenth century, and perhaps during the 1170s. An uncertain tradition credits Hugh de Morville, who participated in the killing of Thomas Becket, with its foundation. That first chapel occupied a riverside position near Newcastle’s early Tyne crossing. The existing building was created after the old chapel shut in 1827. Designed by Newcastle architect John Dobson in the Gothic manner, it was completed in 1830 for £6,000. Later work included galleries in 1837 and a 1972 reordering that extended the chancel and added an altar within the nave.
