About St Matthew's Church, Big Lamp

St Matthew's Church, Big Lamp is a Church of England parish church in Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear. It stands in High Elswick, within the Georgian neighbourhood of Summerhill. The church remains a place of parish worship and is protected as a Grade II* listed building. Its parish now encompasses the former parishes of St Philip in Elswick, St Augustine at Brighton Grove, St Matthew at Big Lamp and St Mary the Virgin at Rye Hill.

The parish was created from part of St John’s parish in November 1869. Its first vicar, Father Robert Daunt, held firmly High Church views, including a belief in the church’s independence in spiritual affairs. From its beginnings, the church therefore developed within the Anglo-Catholic tradition, an approach described as uncommon in the wider diocese.
