About St John the Baptist Church, Newcastle upon Tyne
St John the Baptist Church, Newcastle upon Tyne stands where Grainger Street meets Westgate Road. This Church of England place of worship is dedicated to John the Baptist and is listed at Grade I. Its Anglo-Catholic congregation maintains a traditionalist position and comes under the alternative episcopal care of Beverley’s bishop.
Although the directory records an earlier foundation date, the surviving church is believed to originate around 1287. It is a relatively small building, enclosed by newer development along three of its sides. The squat, square tower is crowned with short pinnacles, while its windows have shallow arched heads. Notable furnishings include a font canopy made in the fifteenth century and a Jacobean preaching desk, both crafted in wood locally. Medieval stained-glass remnants in the Lady Chapel preserve the oldest recognised image of Newcastle’s heraldic arms. A cross-shaped aperture formerly gave an anchorite a view towards the altar from a chamber over today’s sacristy. Sir Charles Nicholson created the rood and the screen behind the altar.
