About St Thomas of Canterbury
St Thomas of Canterbury is an active Church of England parish church on Cothelstone Road, Taunton, Somerset. Worship takes place weekly according to the Book of Common Prayer of 1662. The parish shares a benefice with Bishop’s Lydeard, Lydeard St Lawrence, Bagborough and Combe Florey, and falls within Taunton Archdeaconry. The building is listed at Grade I and has close ties to nearby Cothelstone Manor.
Originating in the twelfth century, the church is a Romanesque structure constructed from red sandstone. Extensive restoration was undertaken in 1864, with major repairs continuing after 2000. Repointing of the porch and tower was completed in 2002, followed in 2006 by roof and gutter repairs that retained the existing tiles. Electrical wiring, illumination and heating beneath the pews were upgraded in 2008. Monuments record the Stawell family, among them Sir Matthew de Stawell, who died in 1379, his wife Elizabeth, and John Stawell, who died in 1603.
