About Church of St Bartholomew
The Church of St Bartholomew is a Church of England place of worship on Main Road in East Lyng, within the Taunton area of Somerset. Dedicated to St Bartholomew, the church has Grade I listed status in recognition of its historic and architectural significance.
Its origins lie in the 1300s, and it occupies ground where a fort once stood. Tradition associates its construction with monks displaced from Athelney Abbey after Henry VIII closed the monastery in 1539. The richly decorated tower was erected in about 1497, using lias stone accented with Hamstone. It comprises three levels, with recessed buttresses rising towards angled pinnacles. Paired bell openings feature two lights, Somerset-style tracery, quatrefoil screens and slender attached shafts; related single openings appear beneath them. Stone grotesques depict dragons, including an unusual western carving that blends features of a basilisk or cockatrice with those of a griffin.
