About St Peter & St Paul
St Peter & St Paul is a Church of England parish church on The Fosse in North Curry, Taunton, Somerset. Known locally as the Cathedral of the Moors, it is protected as a Grade I listed building. Since 2007, the parish has formed part of the Athelney benefice alongside Burrowbridge, Lyng and Stoke St Gregory. Its elevated setting provides views across the Levels and surrounding moorland.
Although Norman in origin, most of the present building dates from around 1300, including the lower tower, nave and transepts. The north entrance is the sole surviving element of the earlier church associated with Bishop Reginald Fitz Jocelin. A further storey was added to the tower during the fourteenth century. In 1502, the chancel was reconstructed, a porch was built and the clerestory walls were heightened. Richard Carver undertook limited repairs in 1832, while John Oldrid Scott later rebuilt the north aisle wall and entrance and added the vestry.
