About St Peter's Church
St Peter’s Church is a Church of England church on Staple Fitzpaine Road in Taunton, Somerset. With medieval fabric dating to 1301 and earlier Norman roots, it is listed at Grade I for its architectural and historic importance.
A surviving Norman entrance has been relocated to the aisle on the southern side. The chancel was constructed during the 1300s, followed in the next century by the addition of the northern aisle and changes to the windows. The three-level battlemented tower was completed around 1500 and features a pierced parapet with quatrefoil forms, alongside merlons containing trefoil-shaped openings. Heraldic hunky punk carvings decorate its masonry. The southern porch and vestry are later additions from 1841. Of the six bells, the earliest was cast in 1480, and four others are also original. A further bell was produced in 1803 by Cullompton founder Thomas Castleman Bilbie.
