About St Nicholas

St Nicholas is a Church of England parish church in Taunton, Somerset. It belongs to the Blackdown benefice and has Grade II* listed status, reflecting its architectural and historic importance.

A Norman church originally occupied the site, before Benjamin Ferrey rebuilt it in 1842. Elements associated with the earlier building remain, including two corbels, a pale stone Norman font, and Romanesque-style features in the nave arcade and chancel arch. Charles Edmund Giles added the southern aisle and reconstructed the tower in 1858, while stained glass made by James Powell and Sons was fitted during the 1850s. Further work on the chancel took place in 1969. Blue Lias stone, dressed masonry and slate form the principal materials. The plan includes a chancel and four-bay nave, with a three-stage tower capped by a pyramidal roof. Two chest tombs stand in the churchyard, including a late eighteenth-century Brown family monument.
