About St Michael's Church
St Michael’s Church is an Anglican parish church on Orchard Portman Road in Taunton, Somerset. Its origins lie in the Norman era, and it now has statutory protection at Grade II*. The church serves a parish in the Seven Sowers benefice, within the Bath and Wells diocese.
The east end was renewed during the early fifteenth century, followed by construction of the tower in about 1540. Later changes occurred across both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. A southern chapel linked to the Portman estate was created around 1450, taken down in 1844 and reconstructed in 1910. The plan includes a nave of three bays, a chancel, vestry and southern chapel. Diagonal supports reinforce the tower, which rises through three levels and has a crenellated top. Interior details include a six-sided pulpit influenced by Jacobean design and glass from the medieval, Victorian and later periods. Dr Thomas Bond, a physician associated with the 1888 Jack the Ripper investigation, lies in the churchyard.
