About St Michael's

St Michael’s is a Church of England parish church on St Michael’s Hill in Taunton, Somerset. Originating in the thirteenth century, it occupies the site of an older chapel. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building, a status granted in 1956, and serves an Anglican parish within the Archdeaconry of Taunton.

Parts of the earliest structure survive around the tower base, although much of the building is from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Red sandstone rubble forms the walls, complemented by Hamstone details and slate roofing. Its plan includes a nave of four bays, north and south aisles, a medieval south porch and a tall west tower positioned at an angle. Inside are a Norman circular font, wagon-shaped roofs and richly carved early sixteenth-century pew ends. John Hayward of Exeter oversaw repairs and an extension during the restoration of 1849–50.
