St. Mary’s Church is a Church of England church on Church Street in Taunton, Somerset. Dating from the medieval period, it is recognised as a Grade I listed building, reflecting its exceptional architectural and historic significance.
The church has origins in the fourteenth century, with further work carried out during the fifteenth century. Its tower was constructed around 1497 and features openwork battlements, pinnacles and buttresses decorated at several levels. Weathered stone carvings known as hunky punks survive, including one thought to depict a sea serpent. Edward Jeboult of Taunton enlarged the building in 1860–62, adding another bay and a vestry. An eleven-month conservation project in 2010–11 concentrated on the tower. The churchyard contains historically important tombs and two crosses, including a medieval cross and a former market cross relocated there during the nineteenth century.
