About St Mary Magdalene, Taunton

St Mary Magdalene, Taunton is an active Church of England parish church and minster in Taunton, Somerset. Dedicated to Mary Magdalene, it belongs to the Diocese of Bath and Wells and shares a benefice with St John the Evangelist. The church received minster status in 2022 and is protected as a Grade I listed building.

Its origins probably reach back to the late 12th century, when it was linked to Taunton Priory, and it became Taunton’s town church in 1308. A chapel was consecrated in 1437, while the present Perpendicular Gothic building was finished in 1508. Constructed from sandstone, it has a painted interior, Victorian stained glass and sculpture, along with military memorials connected with Somerset. Its prominent tower, first erected around 1503 with wealth from the wool industry, was reconstructed to the same design between 1858 and 1862. Rising to 48 metres at its pinnacles, it contains a clock and 15 bells.
