About St John the Evangelist Church
St John the Evangelist Church is an active Church of England parish church on Park Street in Taunton, Somerset. It holds Grade I listed status and shares a benefice with St Mary Magdalene, Taunton. Founded in the Anglo-Catholic tradition, the church now describes its approach as Inclusive Catholic. It belongs to the Diocese of Bath and Wells and the Archdeaconry of Taunton.
Frederick Jeremiah Smith initiated the church to serve poorer residents without charging them to use its pews, making worship freely available. George Gilbert Scott oversaw its construction between 1858 and 1863, using Somerset materials including Hamstone, Bath stone and sandstone quarried at Bishops Lydeard. The building was consecrated on 13 April 1863. An organ made by Henry Willis was added the following year.
