About St John the Baptist

St John the Baptist is a Church of England church in Taunton, Somerset. Serving a parish within the Deane Vale benefice and Bath and Wells diocese, it is recognised for its historic and architectural interest with Grade II listed status.

Christian worship was established on the site by the 1160s, and an earlier church may have stood there. The medieval tower, dating to the thirteenth century, is the principal surviving element of that building. Edward Ashworth oversaw an extensive reconstruction in 1841, renewing most of the structure and its chancel, while a vestry followed later in the Victorian period. Red sandstone walls are covered by a slate roof, and the plan includes a two-bay nave. Diagonal supports reinforce the tower, which rises through three levels. Five bells were remade in 1898, with the earliest predecessor dating from 1657. An ancient churchyard cross has an eight-sided base, a narrowing shaft and a male figure carved into the stone.
