About St James Church
St James Church, on St James Street in Taunton, is an active Anglican parish dedicated to James the Greater. It is within the Bath and Wells diocese and has an evangelical character. The Grade II* listed church adjoins Somerset County Ground and is a well-known feature behind the cricket venue.
The current structure has its origins in the early 1300s, while a place of worship connected with Taunton Priory stood here as early as the 900s. Medieval elements survive in the timber roofs spanning the nave and northern aisle, the font from the 1400s and pieces of glass of similar age at the west end. The southern aisle and porch were renewed in 1836 and 1837. During the 1870s, the west tower was replaced with the present 111-foot structure, and the chancel was reconstructed in 1884. The church also contains a pulpit made in 1633 and nineteenth-century windows by Clayton and Bell.
