About St Georges Church
St Georges Church stands in Taunton, Somerset, and serves Wilton as its Church of England parish church. It is part of Taunton deanery and the Bath and Wells diocese, and continues to function as a place of worship. Its architectural and historic importance is recognised through Grade II* protection.
Christian use of the site began with a Saxon chapel, and traces of early alternating stonework remain. An eleventh-century tower once formed part of the structure, though the fabric seen today is largely Gothic work from the nineteenth century. During the later 1830s, Richard Carver lengthened the nave by two sections and added a new chancel and a pair of chapels. The tower was replaced in 1853, and J. Houghton Spencer reorganised the interior in 1870. Rubble stone walls are finished with Hamstone details beneath slate roofing. The two-level tower has Perpendicular Gothic character, corner buttresses, a crenellated parapet and paired openings at bell level. A vestry was added around the beginning of the twentieth century.
