About St George's Church

St George’s Church is a Church of England parish church on Church Lane in Taunton, Somerset. It belongs to the Quantock Towers benefice in the Taunton archdeaconry and is protected as a Grade I listed building. An ancient yew, believed to be around 1,000 years old, stands in the church grounds.

Dating from the 12th century, the church was substantially reconstructed during the 1400s and 1500s. Its interior contains a medieval pillar piscina, carved angels and grotesque animal heads. A memorial commemorates William Temple, the Archbishop of Canterbury who holidayed locally between 1933 and 1944. The 1922 organ, made by the Positive Organ Company, is housed in a carved oak casing. One tower bell formerly hung at St Saviour’s Church in Larkhall, Bath. Doors dedicated in 2026 honour Somerset cricketer Harold Gimblett and have handles shaped like cricket bats.
