About St Augustine
St Augustine is a Church of England parish church on Doster’s Lane in Taunton, Somerset. Founded at the beginning of the 13th century, in 1201, it continues to serve the parish. The church is recognised for its national architectural and historic importance through its Grade I listing.
A notably plain four-level tower reaches 88 feet, or 26.8 metres, in height. Unlike many medieval towers around Taunton, it has neither decorative pinnacles nor intricate stonework in its windows, creating a narrow and restrained profile. Architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner suggested that the tower predates others nearby. He also considered that the arch beneath it might belong to an earlier church and date from about 1300. The burial ground contains old stocks and a post once used for whipping, both sheltered by a roofed structure.
