About St Andrew & St Mary
St Andrew & St Mary is an Anglican parish church on Church Road in Pitminster, Taunton. It serves within the Blackdown benefice, under the archdeaconry based in Taunton. The church is protected at Grade I for its architectural and historic significance.
Raised around 1300 where a Saxon predecessor had stood, the building was extended in the 1400s. Its walls combine roughly coursed local rubble with dressed Hamstone details, while slate covers most of the roof. A leaded eight-sided spire rises above the two-level tower at the western end. George Gilbert Scott directed substantial alterations in 1869, reconstructing several elements, among them the north aisle, south entrance porch and chancel arch. Further conservation addressed the chancel in 1937 and the Lady Chapel in 1979. Inside are a Perpendicular-style font from the 1400s, a pulpit dating to the early 1600s, surviving pieces of medieval coloured glass and sculpted tombs commemorating successive members of the Colles family.
