About Holy Cross
Holy Cross is a Church of England parish church on Hillfarrance Road, Taunton, Somerset. The parish forms part of the Deane Vale benefice, under the Diocese of Bath and Wells. Recognised for its particular architectural and historic importance, the church is listed at Grade II*.
Construction took place across the 1300s and 1400s, although remnants of an earlier structure may survive in the southern chapel. The tower followed in 1540. Red sandstone walls are complemented by Hamstone detailing, while the tower has three levels, angled supports, carved waterspouts, a battlement-like top and an internal stair projection. Six bells hang in its ringing chamber and were refurbished at Whitechapel in 1925. Restoration was carried out in 1857, the roof received attention in 1967, and repairs accompanied the installation of accessible facilities and a kitchen in 2007. A memorial inside commemorates village men killed in the First World War.
