About Church of the Holy Ghost
The Church of the Holy Ghost is a Church of England parish church on Crowcombe Road in Taunton, Somerset. It belongs to the Quantock Towers benefice in the Quantock deanery and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
A church may have occupied the site since Saxon times. The present tower dates from the fourteenth century, while most of the remaining fabric was built during the fifteenth century. Lightning damaged the spire in 1724, after which its upper portion was removed and placed in the churchyard. Stone from the spire was reused in the church floor. The north aisle chapel, called the Carew Chapel, served the manor’s lords from nearby Crowcombe Court. Carved bench ends made in 1534 include the Green Man and a scene showing Crowcombe men battling a dragon with two heads. The churchyard also contains a medieval cross with an octagonal shaft set upon three steps, which is a scheduled monument.
