About Church of St Mary
The Church of St Mary is an Anglican parish church in Taunton, Somerset. It serves within the South Quantock benefice, which also encompasses West Monkton, Kingston St Mary and Broomfield, and falls under the Diocese of Bath and Wells. The building is protected with a Grade II* designation.
The earliest surviving part is the western tower, erected towards the close of the 1200s. Most other sections were added in the 1400s, followed by expansion during the next century and restoration work in 1861. Constructed from red sandstone with contrasting Hamstone trim, the church comprises a nave divided into three bays, a chancel, a southern porch and matching three-bay aisles to the north and south. The tower has three levels, lacks supporting buttresses and carries a parapet at its summit. Carved pew ends dating from 1530 remain inside.
