About Church of St Mary, Kingston St Mary

The Church of St Mary is a Church of England parish church in Kingston St Mary, near Taunton in Somerset. It belongs to the united benefice of Kingston St Mary and Broomfield, within Taunton deanery, and is protected as a Grade I listed building.

Originating in the 13th century, the church retains a nave and arcades from that period. Its crenellated, three-stage tower was added in the early 1500s and rises to 27 metres, with pinnacles, pierced stonework, buttresses and decorative figures known as hunky punks. The tower received a new roof in 1952, followed by restoration between 1976 and 1978. Inside are early 16th-century carved bench ends and font, a pulpit dated 1742, and varied stained glass. A prominent Purbeck marble tomb in the south aisle commemorates John de la Warre, fourth Earl De La Warr, who took part in the Battle of Poitiers in 1356.
