About Church of St Martin of Tours

The Church of St Martin of Tours is a Church of England church on Silverdown Hill in Taunton, Somerset. Dedicated to the saint whose name it bears, it is protected at Grade II* and is now redundant. The Churches Conservation Trust has cared for the building since 1979, following its formal closure in 1975. It had previously become a chapelry linked to Monksilver in 1969.

Originating in the 13th century, the church retains an unbuttressed, crenellated tower of two stages from that period. Its porch and nave roof were added during the late 15th century. The chancel underwent rebuilding in 1695 and was reconstructed again in 1846. Red sandstone forms the main structure, complemented by Hamstone details and a slate-covered roof. Inside is a distinctive alabaster font, fashioned from material quarried near Watchet.
