About Church of St Leonard
The Church of St Leonard is a Church of England parish church in Taunton, Somerset. It forms part of the Blackdown benefice under the Diocese of Bath and Wells. The building is protected at Grade II*.
The present structure dates to the fourteenth century and replaced an older church. Its earlier history includes a grant made in 1158, when Henry of Blois, then Bishop of Winchester, transferred Otterford chapel to Taunton Priory. Restoration work took place in 1860. Limestone walls are complemented by Hamstone details, while the plan includes a three-bay nave, northern aisle, chancel and vestry. The chancel’s barrel-vaulted ceiling was added during the sixteenth century. Other features include a sundial positioned over the porch and a two-storey tower, approximately 15 metres tall, reinforced by buttresses set diagonally at its corners.
