About Church of St John the Baptist, Hatch Beauchamp

The Church of St John the Baptist, Hatch Beauchamp, is a Church of England place of worship near Taunton in Somerset. It belongs to the Seven Sowers benefice and the Taunton archdeaconry. Dating from around 1150, it is protected as a Grade I listed building.

Originating in the Norman era, the church is distinguished by its battlemented three-stage tower, constructed around 1500. Its decoration includes gargoyles, dog-shaped hunky punks, ornate pinnacles and an openwork parapet featuring quatrefoil designs. Unusually, diagonal buttresses strengthen the tower and carry slender shafts that rise into the smaller corner pinnacles. George Gilbert Scott oversaw restoration work in 1867, when further bays were created in both aisles. A commemorative window honours Colonel John Rouse Merriott Chard, who received the Victoria Cross for his part in defending Rorke’s Drift in 1879.
